RUNNING OUT OF CRITICAL OFFICE SUPPLIES

Date: August 19, 2003

1. IDENTIFY (FIND PROBLEM)

We run out of certain critical office supplies (ink jet cartridges, fax and copy machine toner, etc)   This causes office downtime and special trips into town (muda of time).

2. EXPLOIT (DEFINE CAUSE(S) AND CURE(S))

CAUSE(S):

*People don't read the signs or know to tell Bobbie when they get the last one.

*People forget to tell Bobbie

CURE(S):

*Train all on the "tell Bobbie if you get the last one rule"

*Forgetfulness training

*Put in a different system where people don't have to tell Bobbie

3. SUBORDINATE (INVOLVE\TRAIN OTHERS)

Decided to change to a different system where people don't have to tell Bobbie.

Bobbie will keep one of each critical office supply item in a locked cabinet that only she has access to.

NOTE: Beware of the resistance layers that hinder progress on solving constraints.

 Don't say:

   A) It's not our fault

   B) Our problems are different

   C) Don't have time

   D) Policy won't let us

   E) Management won't support us
